Here is an ABC News story from June 2nd about William Land Park: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewP9W8JXLyM

We all know that William Land Regional Park is a very well-loved and visited park. It’s now over 100 years old! And at that time, who could have predicted it would be so popular today Unfortunately, there’s been more  reckless driving and overly-loud noises disturbing the tranquility so many come to the park for. We’d like to see at least part of the park get back to its original purpose; a car-free spot where people can unwind by getting back in touch with nature. This means creating more space for families to safely bike, walk strollers and roller skate in Land Park.

This isn’t a new idea. It’s part of a growing movement called Open Streets.  You can review the details here; https://openstreetsproject.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/08/open-streets-physical-activity.pdf .

Several cities have set aside large park spaces to get people out of their cars to enjoy healthy physical street activities. An example is Portland Sunday Parkways: https://www.portland.gov/sunday-parkways .

This idea also aligns with Sacramento City’s objective to be more climate-change friendly area.

The Land Park Community Association has been advocating for an Open Streets concept in William Land Park. Our Board sent a letter to our city council in April of 2025. Here is the letter: Letter to Rick Jennings (Sundays in the Park)

If neighbors are interested in this project happening, their voices are needed too. Attend an LPCA meeting or speak to us at one any event we host or attend. These kinds of projects need the support of  passionate neighbors ready to advocate with us!
