We are thrilled to share big news for Traffic Safety in Land Park: a stop sign and barriers to block the passing lane have been installed at Land Park Drive and 11th Ave! This is the result of the LPCA Traffic Safety Committee’s ongoing advocacy for over 3 years. Thank you to the 500 neighbors who made your voices heard through a Petition asking the City to address the reckless driving and frequent accidents seen along Land Park Drive. Thank you to Councilman Rick Jennings for helping the LPCA successfully navigate the many regulatory hurdles to getting this installed. In order to make this happen, the Traffic Safety Committee worked tirelessly to document incidents proving that this intersection met the state required 6 preventable crashes in a year needed to warrant a stop sign. Although the LPCA advocated for “smart” solutions to keep traffic flowing at a reduced speed, such as roundabouts, given resource constraints we are confident that this stop sign will serve its primary purpose: making this main entrance to the park safer for pedestrians, bikes, and cars.
This is one of 4 intersections in the neighborhood with exceptionally high crash rates in the last several years where the LPCA and Councilman Jennings have focused our efforts. So far a stop sign has been successfully installed at 2nd and Land Park Drive, a yet-to-be announced solution is planned for Mead & Sutterville, and we are still evaluating options for Swanston & Riverside. Additionally, neighbors on 11th Ave recently voted to approve installation of speed bumps on their street.
