Dear Land Park Neighbors,
Now that the Sacramento Zoo is remaining in William Land Park, Zoo leadership is moving forward with a request to the City for its expansion. As Mayor Kevin McCarty explained, “This expansion and partnership with the City will make sure the Zoo is here for the next 100 years.”
The Sacramento Zoo quoted me on their website, “The Zoo is a wonderful neighbor, we are excited to see it stay, and we are looking forward to working with the Zoo and the City to make that possible.” I absolutely stand behind that statement. You can see all the statements on the zoo website: https://www.saczoo.org/zoo-update
At the November 20th LPCA community meeting, we provided an update. Dennis Rogers, D7 Chief of Staff for Rick Jennings office spoke. He explained we are at the very beginning stages of this process. The LPCA also spoke with Zoo leadership on a Zoom call to ask questions and hear details. The Zoo expressed they would like to expand out to the former pony ride area and Swanston Stream (behind the zoo). Right now, the Zoo does not have a detailed expansion plan to submit to the city. And Dennis Rogers made it clear a detailed plan will be part of the process if they want to move forward. He also made it clear the public will have time to provide feedback and discuss those details when they are available.
At the time of this post, there is no clear timeline for an expansion into William Land Park.
For those who are not familiar, the Land Park Community Association was formed to prevent the Sacramento Zoo from expanding in the 1980’s. Today, the LPCA wants to support the Zoo while ‘having a seat at the table’ to ensure any expansion meets the approval of the community and reflects the quality-of-life Land Park is known for.
It’s an exciting time, and we look forward to providing more updates about our involvement later.
