Sacramento County Interstate 5 Improvements

While located on the periphery of Land Park, this major project ($325 million) could impact local travel patterns for several years. A CALTRANS contract has been awarded to a joint venture between Granite Hills Construction and Teichert Construction. It will cover 15.2 miles from Elk Grove to northern Sacramento City. Ultimately, the project will address pavement failure, seek to reduce congestion by adding HOV lanes and improve overall safety. It begins in the summer of 2019 and is scheduled to end in the winter or spring of 2023.

As currently planned the project will be initiated in the south this year and then work in both directions will take place beginning in 2020. During the course of construction, and most likely on weekends, I-5 will be reduced at times to 1-2 through lanes in each direction. When that occurs, there is likely to be spillover traffic in Land Park – on Riverside, Freeport and Land Park Boulevards – as traffic seeks to avoid north/south congestion and delays on I-5. Actual paving work will start in the Spring of 2020. More information will be forthcoming in the near future from CALTRANS.
