NEWS

We have all experienced the traffic safety problems in our neighborhood. Speeding cars, difficulty crossing the street whether on foot, bike, or car, cars crashing into homes along Land Park Drive, two fatalities at Riverside and Swanston, and a serious injury crash involving a 12 year old girl at Mead and Sutterville. The LPCA Traffic Safety Committee (TSC) had been hard at work advocating for both immediate and long-term safety enhancements to solve this worsening problem (see Land Park News Article for the data and details on work done to date attached: LPNews June24-2024

We are happy to share that at the September 5th LPCA Community Meeting, Council Member Rick Jennings announced a partial, but meaningful safety improvement: a 4-way stop sign at Land Park Drive and 2nd Ave. While stop signs are far from an ideal solution to our traffic safety issues a stop sign will undoubtedly slow the dangerously fast flow of traffic at this residential intersection. The TSC will continue to advocate for a long-term solution that will keep traffic flowing at slower speeds, such as a mini-roundabouts, but this is a step in the right direction for anyone who has ever tried to cross the street at this intersection or worried that their home could be struck by a speeding car.

Additionally, Jennings teased an unnamed safety feature to be added at Sutterville and Mead, pending buy-in from the family of the 12-year-old girl seriously injured at that site. We will share additional details as they become available.

Land Park has struggled with speeding and accidents along Land Park Drive and 2nd street for decades. This new development is the culmination of discussions and collaboration among the LPCA’s Traffic Safety Lead, Roman Ambroselli, several neighbors, D7 Councilman Rick Jennings office and city staff. The LPCA is dedicated to continuing a positive and productive relationship with our city partners. The volunteer work and time neighbors take to be part of the solution to problems like speeding contribute to the quality of life for everyone who lives in and visit Land Park.
