Broadway – Bridge and Complete Streets Projects

Broadway – Bridge and Complete Streets Projects

Broadway Avenue is an important east/west commercial corridor on the north edge of Land Park, just south of downtown and mid-town Sacramento. There are two projects impacting vehicular, pedestrian, mass transit and commercial traffic in this corridor that need to be monitored for quality of life impacts on Land Park. A third element has been added to include “Broadway Place-making Improvements” with proposals under consideration for pocket parks and other pedestrian amenities.

The “Broadway Complete Street” project is between 3rd and 29th streets. It essentially establishes a road diet for vehicles and enhances bike and pedestrian access. It does this by moving from four vehicle lanes to three, establishing buffered bike lanes, improving marked ped crossings and refuges and making multi-modal improvements to enhance mass transit. It is hoped these changes will improve safety and make the street corridor more inviting for all modes of transportation. Continued review will be necessary to see if indeed these changes have the desired effect. Are vehicle crashes reduced? Are pedestrian/vehicle incidents reduced? Does the streetscape improve? Design is to be completed by Fall 2020, construction to begin in 2021.

West Sacramento and Sacramento are developing preliminary engineering concepts for new bridge across the Sacramento River that will connect with the Broadway corridor putting incoming traffic on X Street. . Land Park will want to follow and evaluate this long-term project (construction is not anticipated to begin until 2030). The bridge is planned as a multi-modal facility that may provide streetcar access and include infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists. How will this bridge impact traffic safety, congestion and other issues along Broadway and the nearby traffic corridors in Land Park?
