Historical District Formation
Historical District Formation
There is interest in establishing all or a part of Land Park as a recognized historical district within the City of Sacramento. The City is presently contracting with the local consulting firm of Page & Turnbull to prepare a comprehensive update of the currently recognized and registered historical districts in the City. Following this process can provide an opportunity to listen and learn that will be relevant to Land Park.
Sacramento City Code Section 17.604.210 provides detailed instructions on the requirements, factors of consideration and contributing resources necessary for historic district formation and recognition.
According to Sean de Courcy, Associate Preservation Planner with the City of Sacramento, it is suggested a process to form a district begins with the local City Councilor, Steve Hansen, giving staff direction to find grants and other funds for a street design review plus historical building preservation documentation necessary to build a case for district formation. Mr. de Courcy noted that although many of the current districts are quite small, future districts need not be as small. He also recommended consideration of establishing a Specific Planning Area as part of the 2019 General Plan Review as an alternative to establishing a historical district. Both directions are being evaluated as means to maintain the historic neighborhood integrity.
