NEWS

Good afternoon everyone,

I first wanted to take a moment and introduce myself to those I have yet to meet. My name is Brian Kinney and I recently took over the role of Executive Lieutenant from Vance Chandler here at the South Command. I also have geographic responsibility over police districts 4A and 4B. I have big shoes to fill with Vance’s departure, but look forward to the challenge. Communication between the police department and the community is essential and I would like to continue on with the monthly updates from the police department.

I have attached the most recent Monthly Chief’s Report from August. The statistics show us that violence continues to be a major concern. It should be noted these increased trends are not unique to Sacramento. Most, if not all, major cities throughout the country have seen increases in violent crime.

Shooting Reports: 43.6 % Increase

Number of Victims Shot: 35.2 % Increase

Our officers continue to do great work and make proactive arrests.

Arrests for Possession of Firearm: 68.5 % Increase

Numbers of Reports with Firearm Seized: 58.7 % Increase

Total Number of Firearms Seized: 46 % Increase

I would also like to share several notable investigations and arrests by the officers working in your community everyday:

On 8/30/21, in response to thefts in the area, bait equipment was deployed in the 900 block of Broadway. Shortly after deployment, the bait was stolen. Officers were able to locate the subject and safely take him into custody and recover the bait equipment.

On 9/6/21, officers responded to the 3800 block of Franklin Blvd on the report of a subject waving a firearm. Based on a description provided by witnesses, responding officers located the subject in the area. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle the subject was in, however, the subject failed to pull over and led officers on a lengthy pursuit. The subject ultimately pulled over after losing a wheel and officers were able to take him into custody without further incident. A search incident to arrest revealed a loaded handgun.

On 9/9/21, officers from the Gang Enforcement Team served a search warrant at a location in the 5900 block of Lake Crest Way. During the search, officers located four firearms, multiple high capacity magazines and illegal narcotics to include cocaine, methamphetamine, and oxy pills. One person was arrested in connection with the illegal items seized.

Also on 9/9/21, our Gang Enforcement Team concluded a gang investigation that culminated in a two location search warrant. During a search of both residents, three handguns, methamphetamine, and over $22,000 in cash was seized. Two people were arrested as a result.

On 9/15/21, officers responded to the 1300 block of Florin Rd on an attempted robbery. A short time later, a second robbery occurred in the 2300 block of Florin Rd. Thankfully, neither victim was injured. Numerous members of the community from both scenes were able to provide responding officers with a detailed description of the suspect. Shortly after 1200 p.m., officers patrolling the area located the suspect and were able to arrest him without incident. This is another great example of how our community and officers work together to solve crime.

In the past few weeks, I have received several emails regarding vehicle thefts and break-ins. The two main things that can reduce your risk are to ensure your vehicle is locked and to remove or hide anything of value. A majority of the time, criminals will bypass your vehicle if its locked and nothing of apparent value can be seen. Crime prevention is all about taking away the opportunity and enticement from criminals. As a reminder, with the colder months, we typically see an increase in vehicle thefts. Most of the increase can be attributed to vehicles being left running and unattended so they can warm up.

I look forward to working with you all. If I can be of assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Thank you,

Lieutenant Brian Kinney #4084
