Get ready to separate your food garbage! The City of Sacramento will launch its organic recycling program this year. The new organic waste law will affect all Californians including households, commercial business and schools.

California State Senate Bill 1383 requires that all organic waste, including food waste and food-soiled paper, be diverted from landfills by 2022. The City’s new food waste recycling program will begin in the summer of 2022. City residents will be able to recycle food waste by placing it in their yard waste can instead of their garbage bin. Organic waste recycling will include food waste, such as fruit and vegetable scraps, dairy, eggs, grains, coffee grounds, spoiled food, etc., and food-soiled paper such as coffee filters and paper napkins.

The City’s Recycling and Solid Waste Division is proposing modest rate adjustments to solid waste collection services that will go into effect in 2022. This rate adjustment will help the City pay for additional equipment and staff, and for increased processing fees for the combined organics stream of green waste and food waste. The rate adjustment will allow Sacramento to comply with California’s aggressive recycling and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction goals, while bringing the City of Sacramento closer to achieving its sustainability goals.
